Onboarding your first cleaning employee: a practical first shift
A first shift works better when the new team member knows where to meet, who will guide them, what they will practice and how questions will be handled. Write down the routine before the day starts.
Before the first shift
- Name a trainer and an owner who can resolve questions.
- Confirm the meeting point, start time, access arrangements and approved task scope.
- Provide the current checklist and show where the approved procedures live.
- Arrange the required training and specialist instructions for your actual work.
This is a generic operating checklist. It does not supply employment policies, legal onboarding requirements, chemical guidance or specialist safety training. Your business must provide those separately.
Demonstrate one routine task
Choose a task within the worker's training and approved scope. The trainer explains the expected result, demonstrates the authorized method and identifies when the worker should stop and ask for help. Do not assume a written procedure alone confirms competence.
Practice under supervision
Have the new team member explain the steps in their own words, then perform the task with supervision. The trainer checks the result against the business's approved standard. If a step is unclear or a result is incomplete, record the question and assign a next action instead of signing it off.
| Task | Trainer | Observed result | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Confirm rooms and visit scope | Team lead | Worker identified the current checklist | Complete |
| Record an incomplete task | Team lead | Worker located the exception record; owner field was blank | Lead shows how to assign an owner before next practice |
Close the shift with a clear handoff
- Review what was demonstrated and what was practiced.
- Record what still needs supervision or clarification.
- Assign an owner and date for each follow-up.
- Confirm the next shift and which approved document version to use.
Keep the record with your internal training materials. Ask whether the written steps match the work, then adapt and approve changes before giving the team a new version. Avoid putting sensitive worker or customer information into publicly shared files.
